In the year 2000, physiotherapist Wim Don and technician Rob Veldhoven had the idea to launch the Flexchair®. After many discussions with the Technical University of Delft, the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam and many other institutions, different samples were created and finally the definitive model was created. This model has been available since March 2004, with many different applications being established over time.
In June 2006, a professional version of the Flexchair® was created, namely, the Trunk Balance Trainer (TBT) The TBT is provided with a stable multiply stand and can be connected to a computer wirelessly. The movements of the back are simulated and visible on the screen. For this a program has been designed, which can be used by paramedics that are connected to the database. All testing and training results can be requested through the use of a personal code. This code will be given to the patient by the specialist when the Personal Active Back (PAB) test is taken.
In 2008, the step was made to make the PAB test scientifically based. A double measurement apparatus was designed so the movements made on the TBT can be controlled. The results of this were so positive that more research was done to increase the applicable area so that more insight can be gained into the movement of the (seating) moving person. Some important people that contributed to this research were, amongst others, professor Wim Dankaerts (Belgium) and professor Peter O’Sullivan (Australia).
In 2010, the name VelDon® was introduced. VelDon® represents all aspects that are associated with the testing and training, anything that entails a measurement instrument and testing and training places. VelDon® is the methodology behind the devices and provides the services, whereas the Flexchair®TBT is the practical execution of the dynamic seating device. The PAB test is done on a Flexchair®TBT at a VelDon® training site. The Flexchair® is the dynamic active sit that can be implemented as a preventive and functional application to improve performances in the workplace or in sports. This helps keep the back healthy and active.
